Are you and your horse ready for a trail ride? This page is a suggestion help section with the intent only to offer some fore-thought into trail riding readiness. Both for those interested in riding our horses or wanting to bring their own four legged companions but aren't quite sure they are up to it.
Bringing your own horse?
First thing I do is to ask myself a series of questions about my horse.
Is my horse sound in mind and body?
Is my horse in good physical condition?
How long of a trip will I start with?
How long will it take to prepare for trail rides?
How long will it take for my horse to build muscle and condition to carry the extra weight of my pack gear?
Is my horse afraid of the extra gear hanging off the saddle?
Is my tack in good condition?
Will it hold up to a long difficult ride?
Do I have a plan of action in case of an emergency?
Will my horse stand in the field to mount?
Can I mount my horse from the ground?
Can I ride for long periods of time without stops?
Is my horse afraid to leave the safety of an arena?
Is my horse a follower or a leader?
Is my horse road smart?
Will my horse run off if spooked or an emergency situation arises?
Will my horse cross water?
Will my horse walk in wooded areas?
Will my horse jump a ditch or move quietly over a fallen long?
Will my horse cross a wooden bridge?
Will my horse stand tied overnight?
Will my horse ground tie?
Does my horse have good social skills and ground manners.
For myself as a rider I ask the following questions:
Am I in good physical condition and mental condition?
What length of a ride am I ready for?
Am I able to ride for periods of two hours or more?
Can I mount a horse from the ground or will I need assistance?
